Becoming a Restorative Dental Hygienist in Ontario

Registrants who wish to practise as a restorative dental hygienist in Ontario must hold a specialty certificate of registration.

To apply for a specialty certificate of registration, you must meet each of the following requirements:

  1. Currently hold a general certificate of registration with CDHO.
  2. Completed an approved restorative dental hygiene program within the last 3 years;    
              OR
    Completed an approved restorative dental hygiene program more than 3 years ago and have been practising restorative dental hygiene in a recognized jurisdiction within the last 3 years;         
              OR
    Completed an approved restorative dental hygiene program more than 3 years ago and completed an approved restorative refresher course within the last 18 months.
  3. Submit the application for a specialty certificate of registration, along with any required supporting documentation, and pay the application fee once the application has been approved.

The following institutions offer restorative dental hygiene programs that have been reviewed and approved by CDHO:

The approval process for the above programs is done on an annual basis. CDHO cannot guarantee that the above named institution(s) will meet the approval requirements for the next approval year until the process has been completed.

For the current application fee, please refer to the Fees table on the CDHO website (see Upgrade to Specialty Certificate of Registration, under the Other Fees heading).

Self-Evaluation of a Restorative Dental Hygiene Program

If you completed a restorative program that is not included in the above list, your application for a specialty certificate of registration must be accompanied by the Self-Evaluation form. Please review the Guide to the Self-Evaluation of a Restorative Dental Hygiene Program for more information. The Self-Evaluation form can be found at the end of the Guide.

Restorative Refresher Course

If you completed your restorative program more than three years ago and you have not been practising as a restorative dental hygienist in a recognized jurisdiction outside of Ontario, you will be required to complete an approved restorative refresher course prior to applying for a specialty certificate of registration. Contact registration@cdho.org for a list of restorative refresher courses currently approved by the College.

 

Application for a Specialty Certificate of Registration

The application for a specialty certificate of registration can be initiated in your Self-Service account by clicking on the Change Status link. Once you have entered the information online, please print and sign the form before submitting to CDHO. As part of the application, we will also require:

  • Proof of successful completion of an approved restorative dental hygiene program, to be sent to CDHO directly from the institution where the program was completed;
  • If applicable, a Certificate of Professional Conduct (Form B) from any jurisdiction where you have previously been registered as a restorative dental hygienist. Form B must be submitted to CDHO directly from the other regulator(s);
  • If applicable, proof of successful completion of an approved restorative refresher course, to be sent to CDHO directly from the course instructor;

It takes approximately 10 business days* to review and approve a completed application once all required documentation is received in our office. You will receive an email letting you know when the application has been approved and advising you that payment can be made in your Self-Service account. Only after you have received an email confirmation that the payment has been processed and the Public Register lists your registration status as “Specialty” can you begin practising restorative dental hygiene in Ontario.

* Please note: If your application is accompanied by the Self-Evaluation of a Restorative Dental Hygiene Program, please allow an additional 4 to 6 weeks for the review of your course of study.
