Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)

Toronto | mai 13, 2014

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is viral respiratory illness first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012. It is caused by a coronaviruscalled MERS-CoV. Most people who have been confirmed to have MERS-CoV infection developed severe acute respiratory illness. They had fever, cough, and shortness of breath. About 30% of these people died.
Dental hygienists should consider the possibility of MERS-CoV infection in persons with respiratory illness that meet the case definitions outlined in the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Guidance for Health Workers and Health Sector Employers on MERS-CoV.

For the latest updates on the MERS-CoV virus, including the total number of cases and deaths, visit the World Health Organization’s Global Alert and Response website. In addition, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care maintains a website with information on MERS-CoV for health workers at www.ontario.ca/novelcoronavirus.
