Bill 70, Regulated Health Professions Amendment Act (Spousal Exception), 2013 Update

Toronto | oct. 25, 2013

On Wednesday, October 23, 2013 Bill 70, Regulated Health Professions Amendment Act (Spousal Exception), 2013 was carried on third reading. Bill 70 is a private members bill created to amend the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) so that health care providers could treat their spouse.

The bill is awaiting Royal Assent and once it receives Royal Assent, it will be considered law.

What does this mean and how is this relevant for dental hygienists?

The proposed amendment to the Act would allow Colleges to decide whether or not they will allow the treatment of spouses. The CDHO Council will evaluate and make a decision if a regulation should be developed and until the Ministry approves a College-specific regulation that allows dental hygienists to treat their spouses, nothing has changed for CDHO registrants - the treatment of spouses is still not allowed. The process for the development of a regulation is a lengthy one and will involve stakeholder consultation and government approval.

The CDHO will keep its registrants informed on this issue by updating the College website and through Milestones and the monthly CDHO E-Brief.
