The CDHO has advised dental hygienists not to provide dental hygiene services. In a time of pandemic, these are not seen as essential services. The CDHO cannot force offices to close but we are strongly recommending that dental hygienists do not provide services.

This is because:

  • Patients/clients should minimize their exposure to others, including reception areas, public transit, elevators, etc.
  • People who carry the virus may not know that they are infected or exhibit symptoms.
  • While infection prevention and control protocols used by dental hygienists are sufficient to protect their clients and themselves, the protective supplies (PPE) needed are in high demand and supplies are dwindling.
  • It is socially responsible to preserve PPE for medical professionals and hospitals to care for those who require urgent medical attention.

We ask that dental hygiene clients respect our advice to dental hygienists and understand why we have taken this approach. Your health and safety are of the utmost importance and informs every decision made by the CDHO.
