NEW UPDATE Regarding Ontario's Dental Hygienists and Treatment of Spouses

Toronto | Nov 03, 2014

CDHO Council is working on a regulation that, if approved by government, would permit dental hygienists to treat their spouses. Due process must be followed before such a regulation comes into effect. It is anticipated that a draft of the proposed regulation will go out for stakeholder consultation after the next meeting of Council February 6, 2015.

After the stakeholder consultation, the results of that consultation and a final draft of the proposed regulation will be presented on May 29, 2015 to Council for approval to submit the proposed regulation to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Until such time that the proposed regulation has been approved by the Ontario Cabinet, dental hygienists remain bound by existing legislation and are not permitted to treat their spouses. While the College has announced its intention to permit the treatment of spouses, it reminds registrants that it is bound by current legislation and will have no choice but to ensure that legislative rules are adhered to by dental hygienists. Please contact the CDHO office with questions.
