About the Examinations

All dental hygienists must pass entry-to-practice examinations before they can register to practise. Examinations verify that all applicants possess the education, competency and qualifications necessary to practise dental hygiene in Ontario.

The examination process consists of two components – a written exam administered by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB) and a clinical exam administered by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario. The written examination must be passed before a candidate can be considered for the clinical exam.

The CDHO has adopted the Canadian Performance Exam in Dental Hygiene, a national exam that ensures those entering the profession are competent and able to provide safe clinical care.
