Your Registered Dental Hygienist
Your oral health is key to your overall physical health and your registered dental hygienist is your expert for preventive oral health care.
Dental hygienists work in a wide variety of practice settings including in their own practice, or independently within a dental health team.
Is my dental hygienist registered?
Only those persons currently registered with CDHO may use the title 'dental hygienist' or any variety or translation of 'dental hygienist', including the initials RDH (Registered Dental Hygienist).
To verify if your dental hygienist is registered, look under
Find a Dental Hygienist. If you do not find the name, please call the College.
What is self-initiation?
Registered Dental Hygienists may provide oral healthcare in settings other than a dental office. They may choose to have their own office or travel to their client's place of residence. Dental Hygienists who are authorized by the CDHO to 'self initiate' do not require the client to have an order from a dentist.
Visit our Directory of Registered Dental Hygienists that are authorized to self initiate and have an independent practice.
Registered Dental Hygienists practice according to the:
- CDHO Code of Ethics
- College Standards of Practice
- Dental Hygiene Act, 1991
- Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991
