Welcome to the CDHO Jurisprudence Education Module

The module is divided into two parts, an on-line course and a final quiz. The CDHO acknowledges that the final quiz is based upon materials developed by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO) and distributed with its permission. The CDHO obtained the right to adapt the CPO quiz to meet the needs of the CDHO. Please review this guide in its entirety prior to beginning the module. The guide is designed to assist you in your completion of the course.

1. Purpose of the Program

The CDHO recognizes that dental hygienists in Ontario are often challenged by the diversity and number of rules and expectations that apply to the practice of dental hygiene in Ontario. The Jurisprudence Education Module has been designed to assist dental hygienists in understanding and applying these rules and expectations. Dental hygienists are not asked to memorize the information, but to have a general knowledge, know where to find relevant information when needed, and be able to apply this information to situations that arise in practice.

2. Description of the Module

The program has been designed as a module to be completed online using realistic scenarios that dental hygienists could encounter in practice. This module has been designed to review learning that is taught in Ontario dental hygiene programs. The CDHO Registrants’ Handbook should be consulted frequently throughout this module. Please note that not all slides have voice-over.

3. Module Content

The College has reviewed all College documents and other legislation relevant to the practice of dental hygiene in Ontario. Areas deemed most important for dental hygienists are included in the module. The module is based on ten content domains:

  1. Introduction to the Jurisprudence Module
  2. Dental Hygienists as Regulated Health Professionals
  3. Confidentiality and Privacy
  4. Consent to Treatment
  5. Record keeping
  6. Conflict of Interest
  7. Professional Boundaries
  8. Mandatory Reports
  9. Working for Yourself and Others
  10. Responsibilities of the Council
All reference documents for the module are available on the College website:  www.cdho.org.

4. Online Examination Instructions

There are 54 multiple choice questions in the final quiz portion of the module. While there are no limits to the number of attempts you take to successfully complete the final quiz, all attempts will be tracked by the College. Keeping this in mind, you are encouraged not to take the final quiz until you are confident that you have spent sufficient time on the module and have had an opportunity to review the documents referenced in each learning section. You will have 90 minutes to complete the quiz and must correctly answer all questions (100%) to successfully complete the quiz.

To access the examination portion of the module (Final Quiz), you will require a user ID and password. Current registrants can use their certificate of registration number and their birth date. New applicants will have to register to access the final quiz. Although there is no fee to take the quiz, the non-refundable $75 initial certificate of application fee is required to be paid at the time of registering for the final quiz.

Once you have entered the final quiz section, read the instructions carefully.

Once you have completed all of the questions and reviewed your answers, you may submit your responses.

5. Guidelines for Appropriate Completion of the Module

The Jurisprudence Education Module is designed to be educative in nature.

In completing the module you may:
  • Refer to College documents and legislation throughout the module.
  • Attempt the final quiz as many times as required.
To complete the module you may not:
  • Log into the system and complete the final quiz for any other dental hygienist or have another any other person log in to complete the module for you.
  • Distribute the final quiz responses to the module to other persons.
  • Seek answers to the module questions from the College.

6. Educational Opportunities

Immediate Feedback

You will know immediately whether you have successfully completed the module. Regardless of your results, a list of all content domains will appear and indicate your results in each domain. This information can be used to guide further self study activities.

7. Policy Issues

Online Participation

The Jurisprudence Education Module is an online tool. Dental hygienists who do not have access to a computer and internet connection at home or work are asked to explore other options for completion, including the use of a public library, an Internet café, or a relative’s or friend’s computer.

Special Needs

The College will make every effort to accommodate registrants unable to complete the module as designed.

Successful Completion

To successfully complete the module, you must answer all the questions correctly. There is no limit on the number of times you can attempt the final quiz. An immediate response will indicate whether the criteria to successfully complete the module have been met. Dental hygienists who are unsuccessful at their first attempt may attempt the final quiz again by logging in with the same password and beginning the quiz again. Prior to doing so, you are encouraged to review the documents related to the content domain. Once you have successfully completed the final quiz, you should save and print a copy of your certificate of completion. A copy of your certificate must be submitted to the CDHO with your application form.

Inappropriate Professional Behaviour

Breaching the principles outlined in section 5 of this document may impact on your application for registration or if you are currently registered, the matter may be referred to the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee (ICRC) for appropriate action, which could include a referral to the Discipline Committee.
